Hello from Emerald Acres!

While the world seems to be at a stand still, things here at Emerald are moving along. Not quite the usual though. We shut down for 3 weeks to essential staff and slowly brought back a few extra hands. Since we deal with produce, disinfecting routines and hand washing are normal procedure at the farm. We had what we needed to take the extra precautions and follow Covid-19 guidelines. It is also pretty easy to keep proper space. There are many different tasks scattered across the farm.

Last year, when we were planning for this season, we made the decision to no longer offer a CSA. We have not planned our fields with enough variety to offer a well-rounded, full season share. That said, we still have some great produce and eggs that are no longer going to restaurants. We would like to make that available for purchase.

Didn’t I say we are moving along? Yes, I did! We have 18 piglets! We have 2 litters of nine each, born 3 weeks apart. They are currently 10 weeks and 7 weeks old. They are adorable now. They will produce some amazing pork this winter! The greenhouse was full of life this winter!   We grew hydroponic lettuce, green house tomatoes and hundreds of bedding plants. We have 16 varieties of tomato and pepper plants, basil and borage as well as ornamentals that included 8 varieties of Coleus and Vinca in a variety of colors. The high tunnel is full of beds growing carrots, beets, scallions, radishes, turnips and spinach. We have started harvesting! In the field we have planted 2400lbs of potatoes, as well as peas, carrots and cippolini onions. The garlic and strawberries are coming to life and asparagus is just starting to be harvested. We planted 500 raspberry starts last week and planted more than 360 tomato and pepper plants this week. We have started planting 4000 new strawberry starts and plan to add 1000 more asparagus crowns. Our chickens are back to full production, so we average 50 dozen per week. That is a lot of gathering and washing! We would love to take your gently used egg cartons for re-use. For your safety, they will be properly stored and allowed to sit for at least 7 days before being used again.

Like I mentioned, I would like to still give you the option to purchase produce. I will begin posting a newsletter, every Monday, identifying what we have available to purchase that week. I will post each Monday by 10:00am with orders accepted, by email, thru Tuesday at 4:00pm for priority availability. I will verify orders, by email, no later Wednesday at 10:00am and arrange a time for pick up or delivery. We ask that payment be made through the website. A check or exact cash will also be accepted. We will not be making change. Orders must be picked up or delivered, as scheduled, by Thursday or Friday each week. Orders not picked up or able to be delivered will be donated to a Foodnet location in Lincoln. Orders for delivery will be charged additional.
